Seems like a daily thing, now. Getting to be a gallows humor thing....

The Police Department has changed its report of the sexes of the nine bystanders who were shot, now saying that four were women and five were men (at his press conference Kelly incorrectly said two women, seven men).

Summary of latest developments
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has concluded his press conference outside the Empire State Building. To recap:

• The gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, 53, confronted the victim, a 41-year-old former coworker, on a sidewalk and shot him dead, striking him three times. The gunman concealed his .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun in a black bag and walked away from the scene, walking about two blocks.

• A construction worker followed the gunman and alerted officers near the Empire State Building. When two police officers confronted Johnson, he drew the gun and fired on them. The officers shot him dead.

• The mayor said some of the nine others wounded may have been shot by police. Seven men and two women are in hospital: none has life-threatening injuries, the mayor said. Bloomberg also said police have video of the confrontation between police and Johnson.

• The suspect, Johnson, had worked for about six years as a women's clothing designer at Hazan Imports. Johnson lost his job at the business, near the Empire State Building, about a year ago. While the shooting took place near the landmark, it was not otherwise connected to the incident.

N.Y. gunman was a bird watcher

Quote:
................Johnson also was part of a community of bird watchers and photographers who document hawks and other wildlife living in Central Park, a few blocks from his home.

In one e-mail to another bird watcher who works at The Associated Press, Johnson wrote tenderly about spending a winter night watching ducks in the park.

"Near midnight by the Harlem Meer I watched a little 'flotilla' of Mallards swimming and softly honking … fifteen degree temp and they were carrying on unfazed. Just remarkable," he wrote.

His photographs of Central Park's hawk population appeared regularly on blogs tracking the birds.
.................

do we need to look out for those bird watcher types? maybe treat them a little different perhaps some added pressures, stresses, or persecution?

With 9 citizens down as a result of police bullets (or fragments thereof) in this incident, maybe it will finally get the attention of those who have have insisted after previous shootings that police "should have" shot a suspect in the legs, knees, arms, shoulder, etc - perhaps even shoot the gun out of a suspect's hand, as opposed to shooting and killing a suspect.

I'm usually as eager as anyone to jump on the "there was a better, less deadly alternative!" bus when a candy thief, tagger, or even car thief is pumped full of lead by cops. But when folks start pretending there is any cop in the country who can shoot with accuracy anything like all those cops they've seen in movies and on television for the last century or so, I gotta hop off the bus.

While these two NY cops seem to have done an especially poor job of recognizing their 'field of fire' problems, and tailoring their approach and shooting to address those, they have illustrated the level of accuracy one can expect from cops on the force for 15 years.
