‘Teacott’ Works- Tampa Inn Drops Tea Party Group After Threat Of A Boycott

July 6, 2011
By Matthew Desmond

Champions of the Tea Party and Libertarians like Ron Paul and Rand Paul tout the merits of the ‘free market’. A portion of what they believe regarding the free market is that businesses should be allowed to refuse service to anyone, even if it’s racially motivated, and that if enough people are offended people will boycott the business until they either change their policies or go out of business. How would they feel if those same principles were applied to a business, because of the fact that it hosts and sponsors a tea party group?

That’s exactly what happened in Tampa, Florida. The website Teacott.com, which lists businesses that cater to, sponsor, or provide services to tea party events, recently listed the ‘Vista Inn & Suites’ on their website when they found out the hotel was hosting meetings for, and sponsoring, the ‘Tampa 912′ group, a local tea party faction.

Vista Inn & Suites responded promptly, stating that they do “not endorse any political causes and [maintain] a neutral stance”. Shortly after the ended their sponsorship of the ‘Tampa 912′ group, and cancelled all future meetings at their hotel.

I wonder if anyone vetts the submissions to this website. Looking through the few companies listed in the "National" category a quite a few have as a reason for the "Tea"cott that the company advertises on FoxNews. I guess that people could say FoxNews supports the tea party, but FoxNews doesn't even appear on the list of companies. From looking at some other entries it may be that this is just a good chance for people to vent about a company they don't approve of whether it has connections to the tea party movement or not. The following quote is a good example of this is the one about Spirit Airlines that was found in the "Florida" category.

Quote:
Description of support: Company apparently is ridiculing Congressman Wiener because of the recent twitter scandal. It is disgraceful that the airline is taking sides in this. If it is was a GOP they would never do anything like this. Plus the airline demeans women and minorities

That is just a rant about treatment of Congressman Wiener and has nothing even remotely to do with the tea party. Better make sure that you check out the reasons for inclusion on this list before boycotting anyone.

I honestly don't care about Spirit's ideological leanings - they're a crappy airline with incredibly poor service - so I don't need to boycott them - I already wouldn't use them.

I once was flying to the Bahamas on Spirit, and I showed up at the terminal to find a line spilling outside the building and out onto the sidewalk. I had to wait more than an hour to talk to a ticket agent (most of that time in the 95 degree sun), and ended up missing my flight (and taking a later one).

Why so long? Too few agents, and the genius of an airline had scheduled five flights that morning to all leave at almost exactly the same time. Any airline with an ounce of sense staggers their departures for exactly that reason. But no, "catch the Spirit".

I won't ever fly them again: I guess I've already started my own personal boycott, because they suck. I won't even get into their ridiculous baggage charges and the lack of amenities, including food, while in-flight.

Fox News does support the Tea Party. And by support, I mean promoting them on-air, not just covering them.

Have to agree with you on this point. Weiner's behavior became a nationally recognized issue. Linking yourself to a known phenomenon is marketing 101. It does appear that they were included in this simply because someone felt their sacred cow had been gored.

Counter protest against tea party rally outdraws actual tea party rally

Check out these pictures, all by One Wisconsin Now, of the tea party event in La Crosse. It doesn't even look like 100 people attended:
