This one's really old. I first heard it with the Carters riding in the helicopter.

The only difference is, some of these teabag nutjobs may not be joking...

More here.

I think the fascists understand that assassination of The President will effectively lead to a "scorched earth" situation and the permanent elimination of fascism. I wouldn't give any of this nonsense any credence.

This old chestnut hardly rises to the level of being a bad joke, to say nothing of it allegedly being a "joke about killing the Obamas."

I don't have enough outrage and offense to spread around for all the real and significant threats, smears and slurs issued literally every day, so I certainly can't spare any for the likes of this.

It's true. After the corporatists killed JFK (you know it's true) Johnson got every one of Kennedy's proposals past both the house and the congress and made them the law of the land. That's why we have Medicare. I doubt that right wing elements will ever assassinate another president.

Wow, I don't know how you can go THAT far. I think we've seen more than enough arrests in just the last couple of years to demonstrate that the Becks, O'Reilly's, Limbaughs, Coulters, etc. of the nation have wound up enough whack-jobs, have utterly convinced them of so many ridiculous things about Obama - from his being foreign-born, to his actively hating America, to his agenda of bringing down the country - that there are MANY individuals and several ad hoc groups out there that would be proud to do the deed.

True enough, most if not all are as ill-equipped and incapable as to be comparable to me declaring that I am headed to New York to meet Rachel Maddow, lure her into abandoning her sexual identity, falling in love with me and pleading with me to marry her.

But unlike Rachel and I, all they need is an unexpected break - a momentary lapse, or an unanticipated attack. Moreover, as we've seen with other nuts in the very recent past, getting away cleanly and unharmed may be a lot more than they're hoping for or care about, if the goal is to "Save the USA."

I confess I am VERY concerned about Obama campaigning and coming into a lot of contact with "the public" over the next 15 months.

It doesn't take the well-organized, well-funded sinister roots of the corporatist RW to pull it off.

Well, there's always the lone wolf wackadoodle so, in that sense I stand corrected.
I was referring to an organized effort complete with a cover-up, plausible deniability and a patsy.
You may be right that the R-W media may have whipped some fool up into a frenzy. I just think it's unlikely that a lone wolf will get close enough to do any real damage. But, then again that nut did manage to shoot Gabby Gifford. So, I guess I should never say never.

That's the point I'm making. This is a lame joke, and the woman who posted it isn't nuts enough to attempt something, but maybe the people who brought signs about not bringing their guns...this time, or the ones who actually did bring guns to rallies or even presidential events...all the paranoia being spewed on radio and TV (Beck especially - remember one of his followers said he was going to attack the Tides Foundation because of what Beck had said about them) about him not being a real American, destroying the economy on purpose, etc...i don't think we're that far away from that, especially with unemployment still high and the economy lagging.

Well, as you can see above, I don't dismiss the possibility of somebody, or some number of somebodies, making a try. But at the same time, I don't think the country is - or ever CAN be - such a fragile and delicate hothouse flower that remarks on a par with this one should be roundly condemned.

I know - it's like trying to define "obscene." I know it when I see it. AFIC, a joke like this one - a version of which I am SURE was told with GWB in the starring role - doesn't warrant attention, not even to the point of being blamed for inciting or inspiring others, or diminishing the seriousness of assassination, or the value of life. The same would probably go for the "I'm carrying" signs, as those are now part of the landscape.

Where exactly the line IS? I dunno. Gotta see whatever it is.

But on the OTHER side of the line would certainly be serious stuff that has prominent people saying, "Somebody has got to DO something!"

I remember laughing my ass off at that joke when the target was Bush....the difference is, are there really 256 million people against Obama? I don't think so...joke's on them!

The first time I saw it was in the 90s, when instead of the Obamas, the occupants of the airplane (not helicopter) were the Clintons and the Gores. The number makes more sense that way.

Rightwingers and humor...not so much.

I'd love for 256 million to see that post. Call me a starry-eyed optimist but I'm betting that means at least a few million that will figure out what kind of person she is for posting something that petty.
