Let us stop legitimizing this Tea Party and call it what it is. It is now fueled by Big Corporate interest and disgruntled people who are still mad about losing the Civil War. They want to secede from the United States, destroy Labor Unions, home school and eliminate the Dept. of Education, eliminate all social safety nets. Can anyone imagine what shape our country would be in right now with the unemployment rate like it is today if we didn't have these Safety Nets in place, ( Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid ). We would truly be in a deep Depression. I think we should start using the term "Confederate Party" and "cult like" to describe them and stop giving them a pass for being a legitimate political party in a democracy. Progressives need to coin their own phrases and terms that they use and stop adopting the terms created by the right. I have one more point to make. A lot of people talk about how Obama is a Centrist and unfortunately our country has been forced so far to the right. In order to create some balance in our country we may in some areas especially economic policies need to pull back left of center. That is the only way you can maintain some balance in a democracy. Progressives can't abandon Obama and the Democrats they must strive to move them in a more progressive direction.

good, I don't have to start a new thread, I KNEW I saw this thread somewhere...

here's a salon.com op-ed piece on just that:

Quote:
The Tea Party, the debt ceiling, and white Southern extremism
The goal, methods and passions of the Tea Party in the House are all characteristic of the radical Southern right

The Tea Party movement takes its name from the Boston Tea Party of 1773, when American patriots dumped British tea into Boston Harbor to protest British imperial power. But while New England was the center of resistance to the British empire, there are few New Englanders to be found in today's Tea Party movement. It should be called the Fort Sumter movement, after the Southern attack on the federal garrison in Fort Sumter in South Carolina on April 12-13, 1861, that began the Civil War. Today's Tea Party movement is merely the latest of a series of attacks on American democracy by the white Southern minority, which for more than two centuries has not hesitated to paralyze, sabotage or, in the case of the Civil War, destroy American democracy in order to get their way.

The mainstream media have completely missed the story, by portraying the Tea Party movement in ideological rather than regional terms. Whether by accident or design, the public faces of the Tea Party in the House are Midwesterners -- Minnesota's Michele Bachmann and Joe Walsh of Illinois. But while there may be Tea Party sympathizers throughout the country, in the House of Representatives the Tea Party faction that has used the debt ceiling issue to plunge the nation into crisis is overwhelmingly Southern in its origins

The only way to "move" our leaders in the Democratic party further left is to give them the tools to do so. VOTE! We all like to shriek and scowl at Congress for it's seemingly insane direction--but where is the real power? The House is almost completely controlled by asshats and their brothers in fear, the mainline Republicans. The Senate, via the filibuster and blue dogs is only slightly better. When you're handed Spam™ and not ham, you make a Spam sandwich, since that's your only recourse. Or should we just sit on our hands and starve?

Randi cites this every time a WHINER calls and dwells (yet again) on the president's genitalia....IF YOU DIDN'T VOTE NOVEMBER 2010, YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELVES!!! I keep asking this question and yet the WHINERS have yet to answer me: WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?? ARE YOU GOING TO CAMPAIGN FOR ROMNEY? PERRY? BACHMANN TURNER OVERDRIVE? OR ARE YOU GOIN TO REPEAT WHAT YOU DID THIS PAST NOVEMBER AND GIVE YOUR VOTE TO THE OPPOSITION, GRANTING THEM 2 VOTES AS OPPOSED TO ONE?
