He started a thread titled "DON'T be an Activist unless you are a PROFESSIONAL". I am not certain what his motivation was.

Yes, and BTW, I pointed out there is no such thing as a "professional activist".

It's not a profession or skill with licensure. "Excuse me sir, you over there chained to the fence of this arms factory. Can I see your activist license, please?"

Even if, BTW, some members of the Obama administration seem to have problems with something called "the professional Left". And I have met some "professional students" working on their 6 and 7 year undergraduate plan.

You can't leave it "to the professionals" because there aren't any.

Everyone who responded to him simply pointed out of course anybody can do activism, and of course everybody should. (Although I think most people would prefer that those who do, are on our side of our particular issues, but that point aside. The activism of Operation Rescue is not one most of us would support.)

It's just that it's not a bad idea to learn from the experience of other activists who have been doing it longer or have done it before in the past. If they were successful with their actions, why not learn from how and why they were successful?

And acting without thinking is not a good idea.

I definitely agree with that.

Yes, the whole concept of a "professional activist" is illogical, in the sense of someone being not only sincerely for something and at the same time being paid for it. The nearest thing to a professional activist is the common paid shill, and who wants those doing the work... Oh, wait, conservatives like those.

Seeker - I know you did. A search +activist +professional of the whole site returned two pages with most from his own thread. I recall sensing frustration from him at the time. Someone may have thrown down the gauntlet in RL, or on another board. I couldn't find it here.

The word activist is one of those loaded words often used as a dog whistle. I hate it when I see the word in an article because it forces me to try to determine if it is being used as a compliment or a pejorative by the writer.

They're still here in Portland. Willamette - the Beautiful Historic District of West Linn to be specific. There's a church down there with an ongoing Impeach Obama stand on the sidewalk and a big picture of him in Joker's face paint.

Well hello from the other side of the river! Yep, They're alive and well here. That's one reason i keep trying to spend time on the Sellwood Bridge campaign since that is their big effort right now. They're stretching their legs with that and numerous candidates on the May ballot who couldn't be more obvious plants if they were green and leafy. I can't tell you (but you know anyway) how many of these jokers dropped the old "We don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem" saw in their blurbs in the voter information guide. And Americans For Privatization of Clackamas County is the crown jewel of Jeff Kropf's kingdom here in Oregon, based out of his compound in Sublimity. AFP's Multnomah County chair actually IS a weath manager (like Scott Bruun who runs again and again). But Tim Phillips also has actual experience in cutting up employee pension plans since he's the guy who got the contract to do it to Thriftway employees.

They're all lined up to go here. And one thing I'm noticing is that many of the greenest, leafiest plants have Bill Kennemer's endorsement, so we know that as soon as they get even a sliver of a majority in the House the Wisconsin Plan is ready to roll here. Thank god we dodged the bullet and kept Dudley Do-Wrong out of the Governor's seat.

Hope to see you next Thursday at the DPCC Central Committee meeting in Gladstone. Organizing For America was there last month along with Rep. Schrader. Don't know who is going to be there this month, but all the local campaigns usually have someone present. The season is beginning!

He just jumped to the term 'professional' because that's the only place his simple binary thinking could go after many of us got critical about the hazards of amateurish goof-ups in activism. In his mind activism is as simple as saying exactly the opposite of what the person you oppose is saying.

Tea Party Rally Promises to Bring in Thousands -- And Only 30 People Show Up

May 21, 2011

A Tea Party rally on Thursday in Columbia, South Carolina was expected to draw 2,000 to 3,000 people, or so its organizers claimed. A key speaker, Donald Trump, canceled his appearance, but the state's governor, Nikki Haley, who's been talked about as a Republican vice presidential candidate, did speak. And yet attendance wasn't in the four figures or even the three figures -- it was 30.

I think when the teapartiers who were elected said that subsidies to the wealthiest corps in human history were more important than balancing the budget or feeding humans, the rank and file got confused

hey, the subject line gave me an idea. Surely there are enough bartenders out there - one of you needs to create a "Tea Party Fizzle."

Please, make it a credible and tasty drink, not too sweet, and heaven knows, NOT TOO COMPLICATED!
