U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., was named Thursday to the citizens advisory board of an Ann Arbor-based legal center that fights for conservative Christian causes.

The appointment of Bachmann, who dropped out of the presidential primary in January, brings another high-profile conservative to the Thomas More Law Center, which increasingly has focused on Islam in recent years. In May, the center named U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., whose views also have sparked controversy, to the advisory board.

"I am pleased to join forces with the Thomas More Law Center," Bachmann said Thursday. "They are in the courts aggressively fighting the internal threat to America posed by radical Islam."

Richard Thompson, the center's president and chief counsel, said that Bachmann "puts country before politics."

"She understands the threat of radical Islam," Thompson said. "We share her concerns regarding the stealth jihad that's being perpetrated against the United States.".......

Sterling Heights City Councilman Paul Smith is at the center of a new controversy stemming from a 2009 video.

It's now going viral and getting the attention of police, the Sterling Heights city manager and taxpayers.

During a Tea Party rally that year in Troy, Smith, who at the time was not an elected official, is shown on the video holding signs with an image of former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm with a noose around her neck and President Barack Obama with a spear through his skull.........

Taylor’s mayor says he’s willing to go to jail over the fight for $8.1 million dollars.

The Taylor City Council and Mayor Jeffrey Lamarand have been at odds over the money, which is a federal grant, that would go towards the city’s fire department to reinstate a handful of firefighters.

Lamarand says the city can’t afford to pay the firefighter’s pensions and benefits and that hiring the firefighters back now with the federal tax money will only delay the problem.
The council has argued the mayor needs to accept the grant to solve the immediate safety issue and keep the firefighters on board. Council members adopted a resolution to accept the grant and took the mayor to court when he refused the money.

A Wayne County Circuit Court judge ruled last month that Lamarand must go along with City Council and take the money. Lamarand has until midnight Tuesday to sign off on it or face contempt of court.

But in a statement early Tuesday, Lamarand said he could not “consciously or willingly accept money that is funded by tax dollars, to spend in a manner that is absolutely unnecessary.”.....................
