Ladies and gentlemen, we may have just won this election. but don't waste time patting yourselves on the back because we may have been handed the opportunity, but we have some work to do to make it happen.

Elections can turn when one side can come up with a short, pithy, catch-all phrase that encompasses everything they stand for and which cannot be effectively countered. This year the phrase is:

STOP THE WAR ON WOMEN

They launched a clear opening salvo in this latest phase of the war on women, a war that has gone on long before now but was just recently redoubled with the obvious attacks on reproductive freedom through health care and even in the doctor's office. They actually proposed RAPE AS A MEANS TO THEIR ENDS! THE BATTLE IS CLEAR. And this is our message.

So I propose a simple but expansive campaign. Spread the message STOP THE WAR ON WOMEN in any way you can. Go print up a stack of bumper stickers and leave them at your local organization for free distribution. Print flyers and drop them from a tall building, paint it on your body and run nude through the sporting even of your choice. Hell, I ain't endorsing this but if somebody in a rough area of town had a little time and a can of paint they'd do a lot better to tag STOP THE WAR ON WOMEN then anything else on that building that's just falling down over there.

I just thought of it so I'll lay claim to the copyright and in turn offer free use to all interested right now. If you already have such an organization then sit back and reap the rewards. If such an organization happens to be Republican then BOO-YAH! We're taking it back, bitches!

Everybody can contribute to this in any way you can. If you are a simple type and can barely manage to do more than repeat catch phrases then here you go. If you are a beautiful activist mind and can frame the agenda of the Republican party into the context of the war on women - and I know you can because you have been - then get crackin'. If you are a forum troll who rebuts everything you hear with the same tired old crap then get your asses over to the con forums and see how often you can post STOP THE WAR ON WOMEN before you get your asses banned. If you are a musician then write the song. If you have a fantasy that you will someday start the FaceBook meme that gets you interviewed by Barbara Walters then here it is!

The War On Women isn't even just the obvious women's health debates going on. If they want to cut back on WIC it is the WAR ON WOMEN. If they short unemployment benefits they are attacking mothers in the home trying to get food on the table. Unfair law enforcement practices? Their taking men out of the homes and putting additional burden on women. Bad fiscal policy? Crushing the households of the working Americans and the women holding those families together.

If you can hold a pencil and sit in a subway scrawling this over and over again on scraps of tissue you hand to passersby you are qualified to take part in this campaign!

Even the acronym, W.O.W., has punch. "Wow, they did it again!" Get this out in any variation you can think of. And see that every car in America has this bumper sticker.

You seem to be reading the winds well. This link leads to an article to explain it, and a page to 50 links for the national 50 state Facebook campaign, it was apparently launched two day ago.

Good! Glad it is already in motion. Kinda takes the pressure off being just a part of the campaign instead of trying to figure out how to launch one. Still leaves me all the same steps to start with personally: price printing, rally interest, try to raise printing costs. The march is good but the march should also be continuous through November and beyond. But every voice is good. One beauty of this message is it is impossible to coopt without making oneself look like an ass. What are they going to do? "We need to imprison women to protect them! Save them from hard decisions!" Please, that's all played out. They have no new moves to play.

I find the attacks on abortion rights and contraception to be troubling. Most American women have used or do use contraception, so I have to wonder why they are trying to appeal to a very small base. Perhaps this will help reduce the Republican Party to a much smaller party. (If the party of Gingrich, Romney and Santorum goes the way of the Whigs, I will not mourn.)

One can hope. Did you catch Gov. KrispyKreme on Face The Nation this morning? Speaking for Romney he not only backed away from the attacks on women's health, he dumped them all in Santorum's lap and RAN the other way screaming "Larry! Moe! CHEESE!"

Pennsylvania poised to enact most restrictive abortion law of 2012
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/02/27/p ... w-of-2012/

Even as the transvaginal ultrasound bill in Virginia was causing national outrage, Pennsylvania conservatives were quietly pushing a even more restrictive abortion bill. The legislation is designed with so many difficult and differing restrictions that long-time abortion policy analyst Elizabeth Nash at the Guttmacher Institute told Raw Story, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

In addition to mandating the much-maligned transvaginal ultrasound requirements since rejected by the state of Virginia, Pennsylvania legislators proposed strongly encouraging women to view and listen to the ultrasounds, forcing technicians to give the women personalized copies of the results and mandating how long before any abortion the ultrasound much be preformed — and that’s just for starters.

That last requirement has already been passed and struck down in Louisiana, partially over concerns of patients’ privacy and potential risks for women in abusive relationships", Nash said.

“This bill definitely suffers the legislators-playing-doctor problem. … There are a number of requirements in this bill that are medically unnecessary,” Nash said, pointing out that so many requirements packed into the 22-page bill could make it logistically difficult for abortion providers to comply with them. “This bill is something that would be unacceptable to most women seeking an abortion.”

Additionally, Nash points out that the length of the legislation hides bizarre and unprecedented requirements, such as asking women who gets an ultrasound more than 14 days before her abortion to view a state-approved video on fetal gestation. The bill, unlike many other ultrasound requirements, does offer exceptions for victims of rape and incest; the bill does not require victims to have reported the incidents to the authorities.

“Certainly what’s happening in Pennsylvania and throughout the country has sparked a lot of outrage,” said Andy Hoover of the ACLU of Pennsylvania. Noting that they’ve been fighting two other pieces of anti-choice legislation, one of which puts requirements on abortion providers and one of which would ban abortion coverage in state-sponsored health insurance exchanges, “It’s been the abortion wars for over a year.”

Perhaps even more surprising, the committee didn’t hold a public hearing on the bill before voting it out of committee. Hoover said the state doesn’t require committees to hold public hearings on all bills, but, “We think a hearing was warranted here because the legislators didn’t know what they were voting on.”

Sue Frietsche, senior staff attorney at Pennsylvania’s Women’s Law Project, notes that the legislation also requires the state to compile a list of ultrasound providers, which is likely to include anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers. “I can’t think of a worse recipe for women seeking an abortion,” Frietsche said.

In 2006, Henry Waxman’s staff on the House Government Reform Committee documented [PDF] that federally-funded crisis pregnancy centers were often distributing medically inaccurate and intentionally misleading health information to women.

Considering that more than 60 percent of women who obtain abortions nationally are already mothers, Frietsche said, “This legislation is insulting to women.”

Indeed, the ACLU of Pennsylvania issued a satirical open letter to Virginia earlier this month with the title, “Yes, Virginia, there is a state more demeaning to women than you,” which listed a number of reasons why the proposed Pennsylvania legislation is worse than Virginia’s much-decried “transvaginal ultrasound” bill.

Frietsche adds that the FDA already recommends that medically unnecessary ultrasounds should be discouraged, since the long-term effects of radiation from the ultrasound machines are unknown. She said the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Pennsylvania Medical Society both oppose the legislation.

The bill faces a vote in the full Pennsylvania state house in mid-March, when the legislature is back in session. A petition at SignOn.org has collected nearly 15,000 signatures opposing the legislation.

We are organizing a 50 state march, on each capitol and on Washington, DC on April 28th...it's coming together nicely! I'm organizing in Oregon. We have to do something besides yell at the sky.

Press Release:
by Unite Against The War on Women on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 6:53am ·

Official UniteWomen.org press release.

All across the country, through legislative proposals, government regulations, and political rhetoric, war is being waged upon women, their bodies, their private interests, and their right to self-determination. This is occurring without, and in spite of, the participation of the same women being affected by these actions, and whose futures, and those of their families, are being unilaterally determined.

In this modern era of limits, people in power are in a race to divide the spoils of power, and the means being used are becoming more and more shortsighted. Saturn has devoured his son, and now looks to his daughters.

Our organization is determined to see that this race to the bottom does not claim the rights and liberties of over one half of the populace. We will not suffer the burdens of those whose ambitions would be fulfilled by the destruction of the human worth of the mothers, sisters and daughters of this great nation.

Enough is enough.

While the logic of the disaffection of the majority of the electorate is impossible to understand, we cannot afford to wait and see how this all works out. This war on women must be resisted, and won, before the toxic effects of the current national conversation become irrevocable reality. We have been denied a seat at the table, but will not be denied our humanity.

Please join us in changing the dialogue and refocusing attention toward the very serious issues this nation faces, and away from the disingenuous and perversely pornographic focus upon the sexual organs of our mothers, sisters and daughters, and their relationship with their physicians and their own bodies.

The issues include:

Reproductive rights

Woman’s health issues

Education

Safety and wholesomeness of food supply

Crimes against women and children

Workplace equality

There is a very real and growing non-partisan concern that women are being sacrificed upon the altar of ambition, and we are determined to deny Saturn his second course.

Thank for your help and support. Your mother, and your mother's mother, and all women everywhere would be proud.

Info@UniteWomen.org

*Please join us all across the nation as we unite and make our voices heard. April 28th is a day of action and every state is planning an event*

Awesome! I think even if Santorum is shut out, despite the fact that Romney has not yet signed the SBA List Pledge there will still be plenty to grouse about. One thing that hits me is where ALEC is in all this. With so many anti-abortion pieces of legislation going down simultaneously (PA now) they are my suspect number one for coordinating them.

Elsewhere I am engaged in a discussion where a con is either ignorant to there being a War On Women or is simply playing dumb for effect. In either case I've resolved that the remedy is to carpet-bomb him with information. No point leaving folks here out of reaping the benefits of that plan ;)

Oh, it's a war. And one with a long
history:
Quote:
(Snip)Throughout most of its first decade, ALEC focused on such hot-button social issues as abortion rights, ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, and the drive to give the District of Columbia full voting rights in Congress. In 1978, for example, Donna Carlson, a state representative from Arizona who served as ALEC's first vice chairman, testified on Capitol Hill in opposition to an effort to extend by seven years the time for ratifying the ERA. "Whether or not it is legal to extend the time period to fourteen years, it seems grievously unfair to put the ERA monkey on the backs of state legislators for fourteen years," Carlson told members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights. "What would you think of a football coach who demanded a fifth quarter because his team was behind?"

And ALEC today:

Quote:
Earlier this week I wrote an article on Pennsylvania House Bill 1077, The Woman's Right to Know Act. A bill, which would require medical providers to offer an ultrasound prior to an abortion. HB1077 was forwarded to the floor from the PA House Committee on Health with a 15-7 vote on Feb 6, and appears on the legislative calender for March 12th. Since, the Majority Leader is a co-sponsor of the bill, it would be safe to assume it has a decent chance of being heard. HB1077, has received a lot of backlash, and in the wake of the Virginia bill it has left this writer wondering, where these bills come from.

(Snip)Of course, I'm not some big time New York Times investigative reporter, with an entire news department, credentials and sources galore. However, I decided to look into this dilemma as a concerned citizen. I cross referenced the proposed bills co-sponsors with the members of ALEC, reported by the Center for Media and Democracy. In a matter of minutes, I found Rep. Rapp (R-65) and 23 other PA Reps are listed as having ties to ALEC, and everyone of her 23 fellow Rep/ALEC members cosponsored the bill; including the Democrats
cosponsoring the bill.

Then I took a look at Virginia Delegate Kathy Byron (R-22), sponsor of Virginia controversial ultrasound bill, who I found is a proud member of ALEC. Her webpage she proclaims it under her memberships and touts her Telecommunication Task Force assignment, an assignment she shares with among many other PA ALEC State Chairman and bill cosponsor Representative John Evans (R-5).(more at link)
