I feel sorry for ANYbody, or political party, that tries engage in a war with women. They're gonna have their asses handed to them.

Though a peacenik (and coward), I think I'd fight with any three men before any one woman.

Against heterosexual men, anyway, they have one of the best weapons in the world.

Even in ancient Greece, the sisterhood knew they could change the world and end wars by "going on strike" (sexually) - so to speak.

Are you a single mother? Then according to a Wisconsin state senator, you are guilty of child abuse. Automatically.

Yep, just for not yet being married, possibly because the father of your child(ren) abandoned you.

Glenn Grothman, Wisconsin Senator, Proposes Law That Declares Single Parenthood Child Abuse
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/0 ... 16834.html

A controversial bill targeting single parents came to the table at the Senate Committee on Public Health, Human Services and Revenue public hearing in Wisconsin this week.

State senator Glenn Grothman, an admitted opponent of the social welfare establishment that he believes encourages women to have children out of wedlock, introduced Senate Bill 507, which would formally consider single parenthood a contributing factor to child abuse, if passed into law.

Share Your Story: I Have a Say

On the morning of February 16th, Republican Darrell Issa held a Congressional hearing about access to birth control.

No women were invited to testify. The time has come for women to stand up and have their say. We invite women to share their stories, and tell Congress what they have to say about birth control, and why access to contraception matters.

Oh, I'm old enough that what one comic some time ago called "the vaginal wrench" doesn't have the impact on me it may have at one time. But - IN MY EXPERIENCE - women are TOUGH fighters, whether in a battle of words, or physically. They don't quit, and they do what it takes.

The adult discussion we could be having instead of the childish nonsense we're stuck with:

EU eyes quotas for women on company boards
By GABRIELE STEINHAUSER | AP - 15 mins ago
BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is moving closer to introducing mandatory quotas for the number of women on company boards after businesses failed to make sufficient progress in gender equality over the past year.

The EU's Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding, said Monday that at the current rate it would take more than 40 years for women to hold 40 percent of board positions in Europe's publicly traded companies.

"One year ago, I asked companies to voluntarily increase women's presence on corporate boards," Reding said. "However, I regret to see that despite our calls, self- regulation so far has not brought about satisfactory results."

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said that over the past 12 months only 24 companies had signed a pledge to ensure that 30 percent of their board positions are held by women by 2015. By 2020, that figure should increase to 40 percent.

At the moment, only one in seven — or less than 14 percent of — board members at Europe's biggest companies are women, the Commission said. That's up only slightly from just under 12 percent in 2010 and despite the fact that 60 percent of university graduates are now women.

The percentage of women chairing major European companies even fell slightly over the past two years, to 3.2 percent from 3.4 percent in January 2010.

The Commission says that the low presence of women in decision-making positions in big companies is not only a sign of gender inequality, but also hurts companies' results.

"Women do not mean cost for companies. Women mean a benefit. Women mean business," Reding said, citing studies that firms with equal representation of women on their boards had 56 percent higher operating profit compared with companies with all-male boards.

Women ask more questions, are less likely to take decisions with high short-term risks and, since they take the majority of spending decisions in households, and have better feelers for changes in consumer demand, Reding said.(more at link)

Garry Trudeau defends "Doonesbury" abortion strip
By Alex Dobuzinskis | Reuters - 1hr 51 mins ago
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -
"Doonesbury" author Garry Trudeau on Friday defended an upcoming strip that one newspaper has rejected and others have questioned because it deals with a Texas abortion law the cartoonist described as "lunacy."

The law, which went into effect earlier this year and requires abortion providers perform an ultrasound before the procedure, is intended to give pause to pregnant women and possibly reconsider their decision.

Trudeau said in an email that the "party of limited government," a reference to Republicans, has legislated "onerous preconditions for a perfectly legal procedure" and withdrawn funds for reproductive health services that prevent unwanted pregnancies.

"This is happening in statehouses across the country," Trudeau said in the statement. "It's lunacy, and lunacy, of course, is in my
wheelhouse."(More at link)

Miscarriage, Murder, and Forgotten Women

Rennie Gibbs is accused of murder, but the crime she is alleged to have committed does not sound like an ordinary killing. Yet she faces life in prison in Mississippi over the death of her unborn child.

Gibbs became pregnant aged 15, but lost the baby in December 2006 in a stillbirth when she was 36 weeks into the pregnancy. When prosecutors discovered that she had a cocaine habit – though there is no evidence that drug abuse had anything to do with the baby's death – they charged her with the "depraved-heart murder" of her child, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Gibbs is the first woman in Mississippi to be charged with murder relating to the loss of her unborn baby. But her case is by no means isolated. Across the US more and more prosecutions are being brought that seek to turn pregnant women into criminals.

New conservative rule: If you have a drug habit, you must be a murderer. This, despite the fact that there is no evidence linking cocaine use to stillbirths. While it's certainly not a good idea to be using cocaine while pregnant, the fact remains that no scientific research directly links cocaine use to fetal death in late-stage pregnancy. It's far more likely that her poverty, young age, and probable lack of prenatal care had more to do with the stillbirth.

BTW, the Iranian film A Separation deals precisely with this issue. I just saw it.

Incidentally, let me issue a SPOILER WARNING right here, because I can't discuss how or why without spoiling the film. Now, that said:

Apparently, in Iran, if you strike a woman, and she miscarries, you have two options: pay the husband "blood money" for the loss of the child, OR serve a 1-3 year prison sentence. Seems to me that this must be based on Islamic sharia law, which sounds to me exactly like Jewish law (Exodus pretty much argues the same thing, if you strike a pregnant woman and she miscarries, you owe her husband money.)

So causing a miscarriage is not seen as murder exactly, but certainly something punishable. Monetarily, and otherwise. Every miscarriage for which someone could possibly be responsible must be investigated as a crime scene. The film revolves around the man accused of causing a miscarriage proving his innocence.

Looks like the Christian right in Miss. continues their quest to make us more like Iran.

Here's the strip some newspapers felt you shouldn't see.

Why? Too "controversial". That's the other edge of the double edged sword.
