But WE are off base. WE are looking for stuff. WE are making up things. OK, did WE make this up too?

Richard Land, Southern Baptist Convention leader, criticizes black leaders' support for Trayvon Martin

Quote:
The head of the Southern Baptist Convention's public policy arm condemns the response of many black leaders to the Trayvon Martin case as "shameful." Some black pastors within the nation's largest Protestant denomination say Richard Land's comments are setting back an effort to broaden the faith's appeal beyond its traditional white, Southern base.

Land says he stands by his assertion that President Barack Obama "poured gasoline on the racialist fires" when he addressed Martin's slaying and that Obama, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton have used the case "to try to gin up the black vote for an African American president who is in deep, deep, deep trouble for re-election."

Land, who is white, said in an interview he has no regrets about his remarks. He said he understands why the case has touched a nerve among black leaders, but he also defended the idea that people are justified in seeing young black men as threatening: A black man is "statistically more likely to do you harm than a white man."

...

While he recognizes that his comments may hurt black membership within the SBC, he said he was not setting back the quest for racial reconciliation.

"Part of racial reconciliation is being able to speak the truth in love without being called a racist and without having to bow down to the god of political correctness," he said

...

"I have no doubt, based on the emails I have received, that a vast majority of Southern Baptists agree with me," he said.

Land made the comments about Sharpton, Jackson and Obama during his weekly radio show. His broader point was that there has been a rush to judgment, with many people convinced that shooter George Zimmerman is guilty even before he goes to trial.

I think religion serves as a cover for racism. It certainly did during the 1700's, especially in the Southern Baptist church. Makes me wonder if Land's statements were timed for the upcoming election for a new president of the church---a black man.

It might as well have not been 150 yrs ago or whatever it was, when the civil war ended.

Or 40 yrs ago when civil rights were established, or 60 yrs ago when Jim Crow was the law of the land.

They are pissed off they lost that war, it is that simple...and that war had everything to do with slavery, period.

Get ready for a shocker.

In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed Land to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a federal agency, created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1988, for the purpose of monitoring the freedom of conscience, thought and religion or belief abroad.

Land was the primary author of the Land letter, an open letter sent to President George W. Bush by leaders of the religious right in October 2002 which outlined a "just war" argument in support of the subsequent military invasion of Iraq.

President Bush reappointed Dr. Land for a second term in June 2004. He was subsequently appointed by then Majority Leader Bill Frist in July 2005. Land continues his service to the Commission.

I know, I know ... shocking.

Lots of ideologies do.

Do you think the Black Methodist churches, various National Baptist Conventions, Church of God in Christ etc are covers for "racism"?

Before you answer, consider that it's those denominations, among others, that form the backbone of all Civil Rights activism in the US, and that the entire left still bases itself on that model, one of the most successful social movements in our history.

If you mean Rev. Fred Luter, I doubt it. If anything, Luter will be a useful, Herman Cain-like red herring against the "sharptonandjackson" Black Baptist evilness of death.

Then again, ask any white conservative christian just how well their tokenism ever works out for them.

Richard Land To Retire: Southern Baptist Leader Will Step Down Following Ethics Probe

Religion News Service | By Adelle M. Banks Posted: 08/01/2012 5:53 pm Updated: 08/01/2012 5:53 pm

Religion News Service

(RNS) Richard Land, the man who became the public face of the Southern Baptist Convention on ethical and political issues for nearly 25 years, has announced plans to retire in 2013 after a rough-and-tumble spring.

The decision comes months after Land, president of the SBC's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, made controversial comments about the Trayvon Martin case that resulted in a reprimand and the loss of his radio talk show for the racial tension they caused.

Land, 65, said in a Tuesday (July 31) letter announcing his retirement that he has no intention of ending his role as a culture warrior.

"I believe the 'culture war' is a titanic spiritual struggle for our nation's soul and as a minister of Christ's Gospel, I have no right to retire from that struggle," Land wrote in a two-page letter to the acting chairman of his commission.

The Rev. Fred Luter, who was elected in June as the SBC's first African-American president, said he doesn't believe Land was forced out by church leaders. "If there was a time they wanted to force him out, it would have been when they made their decision," Luter said Wednesday, referring to the June reprimand by the commission's executive committee.

Rather, Luter considers the Martin remarks a "low moment" that should not diminish Land's commitment to racial reconciliation, especially the 1995 SBC resolution the two men worked on apologizing for Southern Baptists' support of slavery during the Civil War era.

"Richard was very passionate in those meetings about the fact that we do not just want this to be a piece of paper, a resolution; we want it to mean something," Luter recalled of their work together. "I will always remember him as a man who was a major voice in our convention desiring that people would be treated fairly regardless of their race."

Critics suspect that Land's departure was expedited by his controversial comments about the case involving the unarmed Florida teen who was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer.

"Despite Land's best efforts to spin his retirement, he's not going out on top," wrote Josh Glasstetter on People for the American Way's "Right Wing Watch" blog. "After two decades of pushing divisive, hard-right politics and making inflammatory remarks, he finally went too far."(continued)

Religion serves as a cover for whatever humans want to believe. It is how they make a god into themselves.

You sound like Richard Dawkins.

A recent USAToday poll found that the fastest growing religion in America is NONE.

There is hope.
