Well good on Hunstman for being fast out of the gate to say, "No fucking way!" (That's a paraphrase, not a real, live quote.)

This could be the first Republican debate I actually watch beginning to end, because it would be EXTREMELY entertaining. From Birtherism, into Obama being Muslim, and from there into Area 51, and then accusations of Obama bowing too low, and Michelle Obama forcing Americans to eat healthy.

I'm really afraid this "debate" will just fade away into a series of regrets from candidates politely citing schedule conflicts, because I wanna see them ALL at this one!

Jon Huntsman will skip presidential debate moderated by Donald Trump

The conservative news magazine Newsmax announced Friday that it would co-sponsor a Republican presidential debate moderated by media personality and real estate tycoon Donald Trump on Dec. 27th in Des Moines, Ia., but they may have trouble convincing candidates to show up.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is the first to send his regrets.

"We look forward to watching Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich suck up to Trump with a big bowl of popcorn," Huntsman spokesman Tim Miller told Yahoo News.

The debate organizers sent out debate notices to the presidential campaigns today, but they have not yet heard back about who will show, Newsmax Social Media Director Brett Sandala confirmed.

"We've gotten a few positive responses but we're not doing any release on that until next week," Sandala said.

Trump will moderate the debate on his own, Sandala said, and will cover several topics.

Randi's right. It's all a game show to them. With Trump at the helm of a debate, the metaphor is complete. We'll see if anyone will bite. Maybe he can get Sarah Palin and Sam Werzlebacher to co-moderate. Call it "American Despot."

Dumb question. Romney, of course!

I'm sure he'll show up looking very hairsuit. No spelling error there. The man just has the look of someone who must resemble Robin Williams from the neck down. Romney in a swimsuit conjures images of Harrison Ford in a vest with hip-slung blaster yelling at him to get the Millenium Falcon ready to go.

Is the debate date April 1 ?

A thought courtesy of Hunter at dailykos

Yeah, they're trying to kill us.

Maybe not kill us physically, sure. Maybe it's just an attempt so demoralize America that everyone will just stay home next November. It will be one clown show after another, over and over, getting sillier and sillier, until the mere thought of politics sends any sane person into a cold sweat, and causes them to lock themselves in their closet or hide under their bed for days at a time. You think you want a democracy, America? All right then, we'll give you democracy: Watch this! And this! And have some of this while you're at it! Had enough yet? No?!

The plot is to make primary season so stupid—and I don't mean normal, political stupid, I mean Toddlers and Tiaras stupid—that only stupid people can bear to watch any of it. Then, when the elections finally roll around, only stupid people will have survived the process. The only people left standing to vote will be people who take Donald Trump seriously, or think Michele Bachmann is a foreign policy genius, or who don't understand that Newt Gingrich looks on them less as fellow citizens than as a source of cheap potential food.

It might work. I can certainly see a dystopian near-future arising where the political season becomes so painful, so absolutely unpalatable that almost nobody in America could tolerate even tuning in. We're halfway there already. Tipping the scales for good might only require ice skating moderators, or a debate in which all the candidates had to give their answers in the form of short puppet shows, or Ron Paul in front of a grill, demonstrating recipes from his recently published cookbook. The ultimate desired result would be something akin to the famous climax of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with audience members having their faces melt off just from glancing at the stage, and the television cameras would all burst into flames.

That, then, would be the final test for who could vote. Not a poll tax, or literacy tests, but a test of will. If you can watch the spectacle of all that the GOP throws at you and still retain some bare thread of sanity, and still want to show up in a voting booth, then you will be allowed to vote. The rest of us will be quivering heaps, resigned to whatever form of government the dimwit class might assign for us, so long as we no longer have to watch Donald Trump moderating presidential anythings ever again.

We are on the same page. After reading the OP, I literally had the same question pop into my head. The whole thing is turning into a beauty contest.

Mirror mirror on my floor, am I the prettiest at the store? I like spastic golden toys.

I just realized a real UP SIDE to this story. It means Donald Trump is going to have to be in Des Moines, Iowa. And in December. Hope he completely misunderstands and ends up staying at the Hampton Inn, and in the "Presidential Suite." (It's wired for cable.)

Oh, the entertainment value of this event just keeps growing and building!
