Google finally divulged details of its much-rumored project to design eye-wear that augments reality with a video featuring their hopes for "project glass," and the results are as impressive as you'd expect, but also a little disconcertingly "man-meets-machine."

We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.

Check out the video below. Techie reactions are already ranging from, "this is too creepy" to "this is too awesome" to somewhere in between. Sure, these glasses might make us look and act like the Terminator, but the Terminator was definitely the good guy in that franchise, right? Whatever, we're definitely getting a pair and marching around Union Square.

Google published a video Wednesday, explaining:

Yeah, it's interesting stuff, this is what they technically call "enhanced reality" or "augmented reality" instead of "virtual reality".

Basically, instead of wearing a visor that blocks your real vision and instead projects an artificial cyberworld into your field of vision, with these glasses, you see a constant digital overlay of data and information over everything you see in the physical world - like google map data, info about the site if it's historic or important, pictures and video people have put about what you're looking at on social networking sites, etc., etc.

I would say the main worry I have is that people wear these while driving, that could be dangerous. Or at least they should have an "off" switch and be left off while they drive. Being bombarded by additional things in your visual field is probably a worse distractor for driving than texting.

In the future, if you're looking at a restaurant, you might see some virtual figure step out of the restaurant who greets you personally and shows you the menu. He only "exists" inside the visual field of your data glasses. Kind of like a custom interactive ad that responds to you.

... I'm not sure if this poses less or more risk than "virtual reality" to society.

I think we all know that the very first application will be porn.
