I love speculating about products before they're released.

It keeps the Mac rumors sites in business ... people love to speculate.

Folds up to the size of a Zippo cigarette lighter, yet when "transformed," it sports a 16" screen, Bose speakers, and Nikor lenses front and back, comes in a possibility of 1,000,000 colors selected by the buyer, batteries keep things running for two years, and costs $49.99.

Oh, and made entirely in Cupertino, CA.

i'm not going to link to to this rumour but i did read it

the monolith rumour is now gaining. apparently they might be using a liquid metal case. it's tough and lighter and more weather resistance and you wouldn't have to buy a protective case for it. monolith in nature. :)

but again just rumour.

in the immortal words of gilda radner ~ it's always something.

i want the iphone5 and can afford it but i'm within hopefully 2 months of buying a townhouse and i'm not sure i want the 50 or 60 dollar bill a month instead of my 20 dollar pay as you go cell phone bill. i have a free blackberry work phone and have begun working on them to let me have an ipone5 but our IT dept doesn't support it yet.

it's nice but think i'll wait to see what all my new bills will be like.

so anyone buy one yet?

I'm seriously thinking of upgrading, I was waiting for the iPhone to be able to use 4G data networks, that to me is far more worthwhile than Siri or the form factor.

But I haven't done it yet, I'm mostly waiting for the shortages, lines, and hoopla to die down. It would be a big upgrade for me, because all I have is the very original, iPhone 1, and I'm way behind on years of upgrade cycles.

I have seen a friends' and got to play with it, interestingly, Apple is now also pre-loading them with a bunch of extra apps from the Apple Store. However, beware the new Apple Maps app, it apparently sucks, hard, you may want to replace it with Google Maps or other alternatives.

Siri seems to have gotten better, but the recognition of even some basic phrases and requests is still a bit iffy.

i got the 5 cuz I want bigger, 4g will be good if i ever get to an area that has it, but bigger is better

now i need angry birds to update their apps so it fills the screen

lol i'm one of those people who long ago bought a garmin to find my way in the big cities to get to meetings on time. the 3d like apple maps looks cool tho.

siri is a little anti canadian altho i hear she has improved her knowledge a little bit.

i am thinking about buying the learn to play piano that will work on my ipad but also an iphone if (or more likely when i buy one). anyone have one of these? i read the reviews and i'm torn about buying one of these of a real keyboard that lights up and has instructions. i like the compactness of it and would prefer to buy a real keyboard without the light up the keys feature and more expensive when i begin to really learn how to play.

I also upgraded Lucy, and waited until a lot of the initial nonsense over getting the phone died down.

The Passbook is possibly the coolest feature. Not fully implemented yet, but I am waiting for the day where I can walk into a store, point my iPhone at some other device, and leave with my purchase.

BTW, the Maps app seems to work just fine for my area. I guess people's disappointment with it depends on where they live.

In other Apple news, Tim Cook has said Apple may start manufacturing at least one of their computers in the U.S. again. Now, I know everybody bowed down to Steve Jobs, but frankly, this is yet another thing I doubt would have happened had the leadership at Apple not changed. :|

wait, what? Passbook? I have that on my Iphone 5 and i think i used it to download united so i could have my tix? is that how it works?

Think so, heard that the CEO of Apple may be looking to build some stuff in US soon...

Gotta admit, the phone and ipad are so cool, just amazing, reminds me of that day approx 1965 sitting in friends house, mom was prof at local university, she came home with a new fangled thing called a calculator, the size of a small suitcase

i dunno siri is the coolest feature imo. never would i type my appointments in the calendar, not consistently anyway. but siri does it for me.

love the 3d maps.

yeah the mini would have never of happened with steve at the wheel and damn i wish i had the mini instead of the ipad2.

ot kinda but why are mac desk top and laptop computers so expensive if they too are made in china? they are like 3 times the cost of their competitors. it doesn't make sense to me)

Two things is my guess: 1. Apple's computers are built with extreme quality control and engineering excellence--that costs money, although probably not as much as they charge which leads to 2. Apple has a creed that states that if they charged more competitive prices, the perceived value would drop.

in china?

their ipads and mini's are far more competitive priced then their desk and laptops

(maybe one is for the general public and the other for big business/government)

(wonders if blackberry 10 will make a come back?)

Although this is less true than it used to be, Apple didn't always use the same components as other PCs.

They used to use a completely different processor (the Motorola PowerPC). However, they now use the same Intel architecture as every other PC.

However, while they pretty much use many of the same components, Apple continues to use some of its own proprietary technology. One recent example is the Thunderbolt port.

Also, Apple's the only one that makes their own OS and software. Part of OS X is open source (the kernel); but the graphical layer (GUI) "Quartz" that sits on top is proprietary to Apple.

So, ostensibly, they claim the reason they charge more is unlike other computer OEMs, they're not just packaging off the shelf components and throwing Microsoft's software on there. They make most of the software (including a lot of the Apps, like iLife and iWork), at least the stuff that comes "out of the box," and make some of the hardware that goes into assembling a Mac.

That gives them a chance to make sure everything integrates, which they claim is beneficial to the user. But is also why they charge more. There are no more Mac "clones" whereas you can get a PC clone from dozens of manufacturers. They do also claim to offer better customer service, especially the training and support they offer through their stores, which is also part of why they charge more. (Consumer Reports usually rates Apple high in these areas year after year.)

That said, what Roy said is part of the rest of the explanation... it's the same reason Apple will never put its retail stores in "low end" discount malls, 'perceived value'. (You'll usually find Bang & Olufsen outlets at the same malls, for the same reason.) Many computer OEMs have razor thin margins on their hardware... some even selling some low end boxes at a loss to 'build loyalty'. Apple will not do this.
